Hot 100 Chart Moves: 5 Seconds of Summer’s ‘Amnesia’ Ascends; Maroon 5’s ‘Animals’ Leaps
The bands roar thanks largely to sales and radio gains, respectively. Plus, moves for Ed Sheeran, Jennifer Lopez and I LOVE MAKONNEN.

As previously reported, Meghan Trainor rules an all-female Billboard Hot 100 top five for a fourth week with “All About That Bass.” Plus, Tove Lo‘s “Habits (Stay High)” and Clean Bandit‘s “Rather Be,” featuring Jess Glynne, reach the top 10. Who else makes notable Hot 100 moves this week?
Ed Sheeran: Sheeran scores his third top 20 Hot 100 hit, as “Don’t” rises 22-17. His breakthrough single “The A Team” reached No. 16 in January 2013 and “Sing” hit a No. 13 high note four months ago.
5 Seconds of Summer: The boy band’s “Amnesia” rockets 37-24 on the Hot 100, marking its highest rank since it debuted at No. 16 in July. The catalyst? On Hot Singles Sales, 5SOS open at No. 1 with their three-song “Amnesia” single, selling 28,000 downloads of the digital bundle, according to Nielsen SoundScan; the sum marks the biggest week for a single on the chart since November 2010. (Since the new “Amnesia” release contains three songs, it meets requirements to appear on Hot Singles Sales instead of the Billboard 200 albums chart.)
“Amnesia” also lifts 20-17 on the Pop Songs radio airplay chart, where it becomes the group’s highest-charting hit. Its debut “She Looks So Perfect” rose to No. 19 on the list in June.
Maroon 5: “Animals,” the second single from the band’s new album V, charges into the Hot 100’s top 40 (51-33). Following its release to radio on Sept. 23, it captures top Airplay Gainer honors, with a 273 percent increase to 22 million in all-format audience, according to Nielsen BDS.
Two songs titled “Animals” have reached the top 40 in the Hot 100’s 56-year history … and both have done so this year. Before Maroon 5’s move, Martin Garrix’s “Animals” pounced to No. 21 in April.
Jennifer Lopez: “Booty” bottoms out, falling from its No. 18 Hot 100 debut last week to No. 45. The song logs a 58 percent drop in streaming following the first-week buzz of its suggestive video. Still, it claims top Digital Gainer honors as it digital sales soar by 157 percent after the Sept. 23 release of its new version with clip co-star Iggy Azalea. (Pitbull also receives a featured credit since he appears on the song’s original album version.)
I LOVE MAKONNEN: The hip-hop artist born Makonnen Sheran debuts at No. 90 with “Tuesday,” which features his OVO imprint boss Drake. The latter star notches his 72nd Hot 100 entry, lifting him past the Beatles (71) for sole possession of the chart’s eighth-most visits all-time.
