Katy Perry’s Colorist Transforms a Fan

Rita Hazan, Katy Perry’s colorist, creates her signature fierce-dyed hair on a fan.

Rita Hazan, celebrity stylist and owner of her eponymous salon, is Katy Perry’s colorist. She is going to remake Perry’s now-signature purple on one lucky fan for Billboard.

STEP 1: Rita Identifies that Caitlin has a lot of existing dye in her hair from previous DIY dye jobs.

STEP 1B: Using a type of bleach, Rita strips the existing color from Caitlin’s hair so the residue doesn’t clash with the final purple.

STEP 1C: Heat expedites the stripping of the color.

STEP 2: The solution is washed out of Caitlin’s hair, taking the excess green dye she had in her hair down the drain. Caitlin’s hair is then washed and blow-dried for the next step. Blow-drying enhances the color sticking to Caitlin’s hair.

STEP 3: The final purple color awaits Caitlin’s head.

STEP 3: Rita paints Caitlin’s hair in sections.

STEP 3: It took Rita three days to produce this shade of purple – it took around ten different colors to get this one particular shade of purple. “Nothing I do makes any sense on the color wheel,” says Hazan. “I just follow my instincts.”

STEP 4: The color sets and dries under the heat.

STEP 5: Vercher creates soft layers by making jagged cuts – creating a feminine yet edgy look.
