Meet eight-member K-pop girl group After School, currently at No. 7 on the K-Pop Hot 100 chart with their latest single “First Love.”
After School is the only girl group with admission-graduation concept with members rotating in and graduated out. Uee (left) joined in 2009 while Jooyeon is an original member.
18-year-old Kaeun joined After School last year, the group’s most recent addition.
For the music and live performances of “First Love,” After School created an impressive pole dancing routine. The girls practice dance moves in their studio.
The group’s leader, Jungah, now has the strength to sit perched atop the pole.
Amid the rigorous training — the group spent six months preparing the performance — Uee cracks a smile in rehearsals.

Member Nana poses for the camera at dance rehearsals.
“It was fun when we started doing moves that we couldn’t do before,” Kaeun says. “No matter how hard the move was, we wanted to do it again. If there was a cool move, we wanted to imitate it.”
Member E-Young strikes a swan-like pose on the pole in dance rehearsals.
“We wanted to break stereotypes,” Uee says. “We want people to see pole dancing in a creative perspective. We want people to realize that pole art is a popular sport and hopefully that can make people want to learn it too.”
The girls have many calloused hands and bruised legs after their “First Love” promotions.
“As we get older, we want to show a better image of us to our fans,” leader Jungah says of how After School’s teamwork.
After School is planning for new releases for Asia, their sub-units and possibly another Korean album this year.
After School appears as a septet after member Lizzy injured herself from the risky performance. “Please remember that we are giving it our all for that short, four minutes of performance,” Nana says.
