An emotional Kelly Clarkson won the inaugural American Idol competition, beating runner-up Justin Guarini (with 58 percent of vote to 42 percent). "I had no idea what the show was until the third audition," Clarkson told The Guardian in 2011. "My goal was just to be a backup singer -- I never intended to be in front."

Clarkson's debut single, her American Idol coronation ballad "A Moment Like This," hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. It crowned the chart for two weeks.

Clarkson and American Idol runner-up Justin Guarini's musical film From Justin to Kelly hit theaters. The movie is a critical and commercial disappointment and Clarkson later says she was “contractually obligated” to do the movie -- and hopes it disappears.

Clarkson's second album Breakaway debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200. Breakaway’s title track was originally written by Avril Lavigne before it was passed to Clarkson for inclusion on the Princess Diaries 2 soundtrack.

The album has more of a rock edge, and there was plenty of behind-the-scenes drama at her label, Arista, prior to the release. “I've sold more than 15 million records worldwide, and still nobody listens to what I have to say," Clarkson told Elle. "I couldn't give a crap about being a star. I've always just wanted to sing and write.”
