The 2022 BET Awards took place at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, June 26. Ahead of the show — billed “culture’s biggest night” — stars showed off their fashions, from casual to cutting edge and beyond.
Among those who made a statement was Jack Harlow, who wore a black T-shirt featuring Lil Nas X, with whom he collaborated on “Industry Baby.” While Harlow was nominated for best male hip-hop artist, the “Panini” rapper did not receive any nominations. Since the nods rolled out, Lil Nas X has been blasting the BET Awards for the perceived snub. He’s taken to Twitter in since-deleted tweets to share his thoughts, writing, ” “i just feel like black gay ppl have to fight to be seen in this world and even when we make it to the top mfs try to pretend we are invisible.” He’s also since released a new song — “Late to Da Party” featuring YoungBoy Never Broke Again — again taking aim at the BET Awards. (The BETs previously responded to say they appreciate the rapper’s works, noting “we proudly showcased his extraordinary talent and creativity on the show” in previous ceremonies.)
Other stars who showed off their fashion sense at the BETs red carpet include Lizzo, who wore a stunning black gown with ruffled sleeves and skirt, Billy Porter, Summer Walker and Chloe Bailey.
This year’s awards show was highlighted by Taraji P. Henson for the second year in a row. Sean “Diddy” Combs is the year’s winner of the lifetime achievement award, and is set to deliver a star-studded performance. The top nominee this year is Doja Cat with six nods. Drake and Ari Lennox follow with four each. You can find the complete list of winners here.
