Last night's Met Gala had an avant-garde dress code to match the event's honoree, designer Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons. That was loosely interpreted by many attendees, some of which wore red, one of Kawakubo's favorite colors, while some appeared to take no adherence to the theme, walking the red carpet in flowing, feminine (and decidedly un-Kawakubo) gowns. But it was music artists like Rihanna, Pharrell Williams and wife Helen Lasichanh, Katy Perry and Solange Knowles who kept the aesthetic and in some cases even dared to wear (and pull off) ultra-out-there Comme des Garçons ensembles. Below, the best dressed music artists of the evening, including those who channeled Kawakubo and those that looked just plain fabulous.

Rihanna has had a tremendous impact on bringing awareness to what the Met Gala is actually all about, showing up on the red carpet year after year in on-theme looks that signal she has a true appreciation for fashion and the decorative arts and their craftsmanship. She proved her commitment again last night by wearing a Rei Kawakubo-designed gown that only Riri could pull off—paired with her own jewelry designs with Chopard, of course.
