With Girls set to end after its sixth season, the stars of the HBO comedy will be out to establish themselves beyond their most familiar roles.
Zosia Mamet — aka Shoshanna — has landed a gig playing one of New York City’s most iconic women. The 27-year old actress will co-star as Patti Smith in the forthcoming biopic of the famed photographer Robert Mapplethorpe.
Simply titled Mapplethorpe, the film will feature Dr. Who star Matt Smith as the titular photographer. The project is helmed by writer and director Ondi Timoner, along with co-producers Sirad Balducci and Eliza Dushku.
The film will start production in summer 2016, according to Deadline.
Smith was incredibly close with Mapplethorpe and lived with him for several years, beginning when she first moved to New York City during the late 1960s. He was a highly influential photographer during the 1970s and 80s, known especially for his black and white portraits. One famous example is the cover of Smith’s 1975 album, Horses.
This isn’t the only Patti Smith-themed film project in the works. In Aug. 2015, Showtime announced plans to adapt Smith’s memoir Just Kids into a television series.
