In this week’s episode of “How It Went Down,” Yungblud tells Billboard about how he created his song “Hope For The Underrated Youth” — a process that involved day-old Joker face paint, lots of coffee, and having hope and faith in today’s “informed” and “forward-thinking” younger generation.
Yungblud tells Billboard that on Halloween night, when he was in Los Angeles and had been dressed up as the Joker, he got into an Uber to go from downtown to Burbank. During the ride, he received a message from his producer in London that included a guitar track that instantly inspired him.
“I just started flowing ideas,” the singer recalls. “So I pull up at the studio, and I go…’I’ve just gone and fucking made a song on the way up.’ And they’re frightened to death, ’cause I look like the Joker and I’ve been in the shower so all my makeup’s run so it looks like I’m out of The Grudge or something.”
After playing them what he wrote, they pointed out the parts they liked and the parts they didn’t, Yungblud added the guitar and tracked the vocals, and then he called his band, woke them up, and told them to come to the studio because he needed live players to make it feel “anthemic.”
“It’s almost a bit like a song like we’re going into battle or something, that’s what I wanted,” Yungblud says. “When you put the headphones on, you need to feel like you’re in a live show, you need to let it take your breath away like it would when confetti comes down and lights come down and blind you and when that chorus hits.”
Finally, after staying up with his band all night and drinking lots of coffee, by 10:00 a.m., the song was finished.
As for what the song is about, Yungblud expresses his deep admiration for his generation, calling them “so forward-thinking” in the way that they feel, speak and act, despite the fact that they are often placed in a box of being “bratty kids talking about nothing.”
“If you look at people like Emma Gonzalez or Billie Eilish or someone like myself, I think they are real representatives of the way young people are thinking, the way we’re actually acting,” Yungblud says. “We genuinely remain informed. You ask someone five years ago, you into politics? People are like, no, fuck no, that’s boring. But right now we have to be. So this song is about me having hope in my generation, hope for my generation and faith in us. Cause we’re sick!”
