It remains to be seen if the embattled Woodstock 50 concert will take place this summer, but in the meantime, you can relive the memories of the original 1969 hippie convergence with an upcoming massive box set from Rhino Records.
Woodstock 50 – Back to the Garden – The Definitive 50th Anniversary Archive will land with a satisfying thud on Aug. 2 as a 38-disc, 432-song, 36 hour limited-edition behemoth that promises the first definitive collection featuring every artist who played the original concert.
With almost every note that was played during the three days of peace, love, traffic and mud, the compilation is a chronological record of the landmark event that set the template for all American festivals to come, from Richie Havens‘ “Hello” to Jimi Hendrix‘s iconic 13-plus dive bomb version of “The Star Spangled Banner.” The set will highlight performances from 32 artists, many of which are previously unreleased.
The $800 set — which will also come in more manageable 10-disc and three-disc versions — will feature a director’s cut of Michael Wadleigh’s Oscar-winning Woodstock documentary on Blu-Ray, a commemorative Ace guitar strap like the one used by Hendrix, a replica of the never-circulated festival program, two photo prints by rock photographer Henry Diltz and a hardbound book from co-promoter Michael Lang, Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace & Music. The definitive collection will come in 1,969 limited-edition, numbered box sets released worldwide, with fully restored audio and 267 previously unreleased tracks.
Along with music from The Who, Sly & the Family Stone, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Melanie, Arlo Guthrie, Joan Baez, Santana, Canned Heat, Mountain, Jefferson Airplane, Joe Cocker, Country Joe & The Fish, Sha Na Na and many more, the set will feature for the first time some bands who were in the movie or on the original soundtrack, including The Band, the Grateful Dead, Creedence Clearwater Revival and Janis Joplin.
Woodstock has been commemorated before, in 1970 with a three-LP album of highlights, as well as in 2009 with a 6-disc set.
