There are so many creepy things that happen on HBO’s Watchmen, which is why it’s notable that the latest piece of score from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross is off-the-charts spooky. The dynamic duo who are rolling out three volumes of music they’ve created for the series just dropped a chilling instrumental version of David Bowie’s iconic Hunky Dory track “Life on Mars?” that consists of just keyboards and synthesizers.
The spare, haunting version of the 1971 song creeps along on a horror show melody as swooshing, ghostly synth noises swirl all around. The remake appeared in the just-aired seventh episode, “An Almost Religious Awe.” Reznor and Ross are releasing three volumes of their soundtrack work for the Damon Lindelof’s adaptation of the comic book, with the third album due out on Dec. 16; the second volume released on Nov. 27.
Reznor and Bowie collaborated on the 1997 single “I’m Afraid of Americans.”
