The Weezer–Toto relationship has come full circle.
On Monday night (July 30), Toto thanked Weezer for their Hot 100-charting cover of “Africa” and launched into their own rendition of the 2001 Weezer single “Hash Pipe.”
“We figured since we were smoking hash since before they were born, that’s the one we should do,” Steve Lukather, the group’s lead guitarist, said onstage at The Centre in Vancouver, B.C. on Monday (July 30). “This is our tribute to Weezer, God bless ’em.”
Toto previously announced that they would be playing the cover after KROQ Los Angeles DJs Ted Stryker and Kevin Klein challenged Toto to perform a Weezer cover track on air last week.
Weezer first covered “Africa” after the @WeezerAfrica Twitter account started to receive attention online. They have since performed the cover on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and put out a 7″ of the song.
