Though Maynard James Keenan teased that Michigan was only “the second best state in the cultural U.S.,” behind Arizona, where he lives and operates his Caduceus Cellars winery, Tool gave fans in Detroit a special treat Saturday night (Nov. 9).

In the midst of touring behind their new album, Fear Inoculum, Tool pulled out the instrumental track “Merkaba” for the first time since 2002. The track, which started as an instrumental opening for “Sober” and grew into its own piece, first appeared in a live version on Tool’s 2000 compilation, Salival, and was positioned in front of “Schism” on Saturday.”
The Ohio-born Keenan was raised partly in Michigan, where his father moved after Keenan’s parents divorced. He graduated from Mason County Central High School in Scottville, Mich., where he was a varsity wrestler, and after serving in the U.S. Army, studied at Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids.

Fear Inoculum, Tool’s first new album in 13 years, premiered Nov. 1 on the Billboard 200 after its Aug. 30 release. The tour visits Toronto Nov. 11-12 at Scotiabank Arena and runs through Nov. 25 in Washington, D.C. No additional or overseas dates have been announce yet.
