With the audience filled with men and women in uniform in town for Fleet Week, Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon teamed up with Darius Rucker for a special armed forced-themed remake of Hootie and the Blowfish’s iconic 1995 hit “Only Wanna Be With You” on Thursday night’s (May 24) show. The men switched things up, of course, strumming their dueling acoustic guitars in front of a giant American flag video for a run through the patriotic “Only Wanna Thank the Troops.”
“Army, Coast Guard, Air Force and Marines/ Here’s to the Navy/ For protecting all our seas,” Rucker sang, as Fallon took over with his irreverent ode to military fitness, “You serve with bravery, you serve with style/ You serve with six pack abs, I can barely run a mile.” The men then blended their voices on the chorus, “Well, we owe it all to you/ I only wanna thank the troops.”
The rest of the parody paid tribute to the brave troops’ crisp uniforms, a plea to pass a law that would allow service men and women to drink for free and more than one joke encouraging them to let loose in New York. Rucker also performed “For the First Time” from his album When Was the Last Time.
