October 2 is going to be remembered as one of the most tragic days of 2017. In addition to the gut-wrenching mass shooting at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas that killed nearly 60 and injured more than 500, rock ‘n’ roll icon Tom Petty was taken off life support after being found unconscious in cardiac arrest.
Petty rose to prominence as the lead singer of his band, The Heartbreakers, in the 1970s and 80s, as well as co-founded the rock supergroup The Traveling Wilburys in 1988. After news of his death broke mere hours after the shooting in Las Vegas, numerous artists took to Twitter to express their grief for his passing. Read comments from Lin-Manuel Miranda, Sheryl Crow and many others below.
I am so grateful for Tom Petty’s music.
Feels selfish to want more, but I always will. Rest in peace. https://t.co/EBOt6J38zx— Lin-Manuel Miranda (@Lin_Manuel) October 2, 2017

#TomPetty was the Edward Hopper of American songwriters. He was a certain kind of bird that had no legs so he could never land on this earth; he lived his whole life in the sky. And now he will spread his wings and sleep on the wind. His name is written in the stars #TomPettyRIP
