A new single from the forthcoming box set An American Treasure — the first release of Tom Petty music since his death in 2017 — has arrived, and it comes in the form of the 1998 recording “Gainesville.” The previously unreleased track comes from the Echo recording sessions.
“Gainesville” serves as the third single from An American Treasure, due out Sept. 28, and pays homage to the late rock legend’s Florida hometown. Both “Keep a Little Soul” and “You and Me (Clubhouse Version)” have already surfaced from the project, with the songs being recorded in 1982 and 2007, respectively.
As a whole, An American Treasure will include 60 tracks over four CDs. The box set features never-before-heard tracks, live performances, alternate versions of songs and much more. “If you knew nothing about the guy,” says Ryan Ulyate, Petty’s longtime producer, “It would still be a really good set of songs you could get into and love. It’s designed to tell you a story.”
