NBC aired Jesus Christ Superstar Live In Concert on Easter Sunday (April 1) and the musical’s lyricist told the all-star cast that they killed it. The televised play — resurrecting composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and Rice’s 1970 rock opera — starred John Legend as Jesus, Hamilton actor Brandon Victor Dixon as Judas and Sara Bareilles as Mary.
Rice congratulated the entire cast and company via Twitter after the broadcast, calling the performance “technically and artistically terrific” and saying it was “good to see something [he and Webber] wrote a while back still appreciated.” “Mary” herself responded, stating that the honor was all theirs.
Legend also tweeted that he “had so much fun” during his portrayal of the title character, and that he was “honored to have been a part of it.” Erik Gronwall, who brought his Swedish metalhead persona to the character of Simon Zealotes, expressed his gratitude on Instagram by saying participating in the music was “the most amazing experience of [his] life.”
Lastly, in true Alice Cooper fashion, the original shock rocker simply tweeted a gif of himself as his villainous character King Herod, appropriately captioned with one of his standout lines: “get out of my life!”
