As part of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamildrop series — in which new Hamilton-centered content will be released each month in 2018 — The Regrettes put their riot girl flair on “Helpless,” a dizzy-in-love number from the hit Broadway musical soundtrack, originally sang by Phillipa Soo as Eliza Schuyler Hamilton.
“I spent weeks after seeing [Hamilton] constantly listening to the soundtrack, and ‘Helpless’ was the song that really stood out to me,” The Regrettes frontwoman Lydia Night said in a statement. “When I found out we were going to do Hamildrops, I knew we had to record ‘Helpless.'”
The result is an amped-up version of the R&B-inspired show tune, which the young Los Angeles rockers have now made entirely their own.
The Regrettes are also embarking on a North American headlining tour this summer. Listen to their rendition of “Helpless” below.
