Welcome back to Takeover Tuesday, where each week, Billboard taps chart-topping artists and tastemakers to compile their very own playlist exclusive to Billboard‘s Spotify account. We give the artists free rein to base the list on whatever subject they choose. The only rule? Make it as creative and unique to them as possible.
After nearly 20 years of releasing music and touring, alt-rock group The Early November aren’t slowing down. The foursome are releasing their fifth studio album, Lilac, on Sept. 27, and are currently trekking around North America on their latest headlining tour.
No strangers to the tour bus life, The Early November guys (Ace Enders, Jeff Kummer, Bill Lugg and Nate Sander) always make sure their playlists are loaded up with road-ready tunes. And for this week’s Takeover Tuesday, Enders is sharing the songs that soundtrack his group’s morning drives.
Starting out the 15-song playlist with Mac DeMarco‘s “Salad Days,” Enders also includes upbeat day-starting vibes from Vampire Weekend, Khalid and Childish Gambino, as well as chiller sounds from Chris Stapleton and Bon Iver that are ideal for that groggy early morning feeling.
Along with referring to Kacey Musgraves as “one of my favorite things happening in country music right now,” Enders also reveals that he’s particularly inspired by Miguel and Travis Scott‘s soaring collab “Sky Walker” as well as Stevie Wonder‘s “Superstition” — the latter of which features his “favorite riff of all time.”
Check out Enders’ full playlist, as well as some more comments from Ace below.
Mac DeMarco, “Salad Days”: This is one of my favorite things to listen to right now. We’ve been doing five-hour drives every day, so I like to get my vibe going with this song for sure.
Kacey Musgraves, “Butterflies”: Kacey is one of my favorite things happening in country music right now. It’s so inspiring to see what she’s doing right now.
Vacationer, “Good As New”: Good old friend, Kenny! He’s such a talented guy, we’ve toured with him a bunch over the years. Vacationer is one of my favorite things to listen to in the morning to get things flowing.
Stevie Wonder, “Superstition”: Favorite riff of all time. This song gets me inspired to be a musician — it captures everything that I would ever want to capture with music. This is when my morning energy goes from just getting started to really feeling inspired for the day.
Houses, “Fast Talk”: I love this song lyrically. The first time I heard it the chorus just hit me — it’s one of those songs that you listen to and think, “I wish I wrote that.”
Frank Sinatra, “The Way You Look Tonight”: Me and my daughter actually have a choreographed routine we do to this one…it’s just such a sentimental, feel-good song. I also love that really old-school, big band feel, and this one is just so lovely.
Eliza & The Delusionals, “Just Exist”: I think it’s a fantastic song — the vibe reminds me so much of where we came from, and it’s a fun one because my wife turned me on to this song. It’s nice to be where we are in life and still be discovering new things.
Miguel, Travis Scott, “Sky Walker”: Melodically, this might be one of my favorite songs of all time. Listening to it gets me excited to be a musician and make me want to keep creating.
