A number of iconic rock stars are slated to cameo in enigmatic director Terrence Malick’s upcoming music-centric flick, Song to Song. Among the cameos in the film set in the fertile Austin, Texas, music scene reported by IndieWire are appearances by Iggy Pop, Patti Smith, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Black Lips.
The movie (due out March 17) focuses on a “modern love story set against the Austin, Texas music scene, two entangled couples — struggling songwriters Faye (Rooney Mara) and BV (Ryan Gosling), and music mogul Cook (Michael Fassbender) and the waitress whom he ensnares (Natalie Portman) — chase success through a rock ‘n’ roll landscape of seduction and betrayal.”
Christian Bale is also reportedly attached to the film, though his role in the project is unknown other than reports that he was spotted walking around the ACL festival grounds and played bongos with the Fleet Foxes during their 2011 set.
Other musicians slated to appear include Lykke Li and Florence + the Machine. It was unclear at press time what roles the musical acts will have in the film (previously called Weightless), the follow-up to Malick’s confounding 2016 drama Knight of Cups. It was previously reported that Mara jammed with the Black Lips on guitar at the Austin City Limits Festival in 2012.
Rolling Stone also noted that Arcade Fire and Iron and Wine were also reportedly filmed by Malick as part of the shoot that began in 2011.
