Brooklyn-based trio TEEN is making a break for it on “Runner,” premiering exclusively on Billboard today (Jan. 23). “Runner” is the latest single from their upcoming fourth record Good Fruit via Carpark Records.
The band — comprised of sisters Teeny, Lizzie, and Katherine Lieberson — brings their mix of rock and synth-pop to a new level with dizzying, propulsive production and commanding vocals that bob and weave through the song’s bold and biting commentary. Fitting the clinical, cut-and-run lyrics, the song follows a breakneck, frenetic pace that shakes away any lingering doubt and gives the listener that final, decisive push to take the next step.
“In relationships, I have a fear of suffocation, a fear of losing freedom, and of anyone squashing my desires, my narrative, mainly because it’s happened,” Teeny Lieberson tells Billboard. “With ‘Runner,’ I wanted to explore a feeling: what makes someone seemingly difficult? Particularly women? Rarely have I had the experience where my partner is OK with my complexities; my intensity, my warmth, my ambition, generosity or lack thereof. The fact that I unabashedly will not be contained. Instead, my experience, especially in relationships with men, has been this: it is far more comfortable to keep me as a projection of what they want, rather than interact with who I really am. When I begin to feel this, and it’s often when a dude is asking me to be his girlfriend and comply with his systems of habit, I run.”
“This isn’t about a phobia of commitment,” Lieberson notes. “It is about looking at commitment differently and having the right to challenge what is being asked of one another.”
Following the album’s debut single “Only Water,” released in late 2018, TEEN seems to be building up to a towering breakup record in Good Fruit as they continue to embrace the idea of defying conventions. With “Runner,” they make it absolutely clear that if it’s not right, they’ll leave you in the dust.
TEEN begins their tour on March 7 in Durham, N.C. before linking with Australian rock group Methyl Ethel later in the month. Tour dates can be found below the jump.
