When Rihanna’s album Anti suddenly dropped on Jan. 27, many were surprised to see it contained a cover of a Tame Impala song. But then again, it makes more sense than you think. Tame Impala gets tagged a “rock band,’ but much of their recent music — particularly the song Rihanna covered — slinks along with a funky, hypnotic groove. Turning “New Person, Same Old Mistakes” into a Rihanna jam called “Same Ol’ Mistakes”? Why not?
Rihanna is down, and the Australian band is, too. Kevin Parker and company issued a statement about the cover to NME. It reads:
The Roc Nation team got in touch with us here at Spinning Top letting us know that Rihanna loved the Tame Impala track “New Person, Same Old Mistakes.” They asked if she could cover the song for her new record. Kevin was more than happy to send it her way. We’re all really happy with how the song turned out, love it!
Spinning Top refers to Spinning Top Music, a Fremantle, Australia-based record label set up by Tame Impala’s management.
The original track came from Tame Impala’s 2015 album Currents.
