Story of the Year helped shape the post-hardcore landscape of the early 2000s with their debut, Page Avenue, which peaked at No. 51 on the Billboard 200 albums chart and became one of the genre’s first albums to earn a Gold certification by the RIAA. The St. Louis quartet are now prepping the release of their sixth full-length, Wolves, whose searing second single, “I Swear I’m Okay,” is premiering today (Nov. 9) on Billboard.
“I Swear I’m Okay” sports the same adrenalized hooks that fans have come to expect from Story of the Year, deftly blending clean vocals and cathartic screams in the song’s climactic final chorus. But the band also expands their sonic palette with vintage synthesizers and electric drums, successfully transitioning the sound and fury of their past into the modern alternative rock arena.
“‘I Swear I’m Okay’ is my favorite song on the album,” guitarist Ryan Phillips says. “It was just one of those magical moments where the music poured out organically — nothing forced, no ulterior or false motives. I immediately felt like the song had a big, worldly vibe that captured the essence and beauty of life and this insane journey on this little rock floating around space. As hippy dippy as that sounds, I don’t know of any other way of explaining it.”
Wolves comes seven years after Story of the Year’s last album, The Constant. The band launched a PledgeMusic campaign late last year to raise money for the album and have since tripled their original goal. The album comes out exclusively on PledgeMusic on Dec. 1, and will be available everywhere on Dec. 8.
