Sleater-Kinney are gearing up for the release of their next album, but they’ll be turning the page on a new chapter down a member.
Drummer Janet Weiss, who teamed up with Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein in the mid-’90s and laid the rhythmic foundation for the rock trio, announced on Monday morning (July 1) that she’s leaving the band after 24 years together.
Their next album, the St. Vincent-produced The Center Won’t Hold, is set for an Aug. 16 release, and is apparently the last to feature Weiss, who cited Sleater-Kinney’s “new direction” as the impetus for her departure.

“The band is headed in a new direction and it is time for me to move on,” she wrote. “I will never forget the heights we reached or the magnificent times Corin, Carrie and I shared. We were a force of nature.”
Sleater-Kinney had previously announced a fall tour scheduled to kick off in Spokane, Wash. on Oct. 8. (Billboard has reached out to the band’s reps for comment.)
