It’s been a decade since fans have gotten new music from The Cure, but don’t let your mascara run just yet, new tracks are just around the corner. Singer Robert Smith appeared on The John Maytham Show this week to talk about the band’s show in Cape Town, South Africa, on Thursday (March 21), during which he revealed that the follow-up to 2008’s 4:13 Dream is done.
“We’ve enjoyed [the shows] and we’ve just recorded a new album for the first time in 10 years,” Smith said, adding, “I’m still doing this for the right reasons.” The leader of the legendary mope rock band, which will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 29, didn’t spill much more about the as-yet-untitled album, except to promise that it will sound exactly like fans would like it to. “We cover different styles of music, but because it’s us doing it, it sounds like us,” he said.
In the meantime, The Cure have nearly two dozen festival dates planned this summer, including a series of four gig at the Sydney Opera House in Australia on May 24, 25, 27 and 28 during which they will play their classic 1989 album Disintegration in its entirety.
