Jane’s Addiction frontman Perry Farrell announced the release date for his first solo album in 18 years on Friday (March 28), Kind Heaven, due out via BMG on June 7. The nine-track effort was recorded with the Kind Heaven Orchestra, and it features contributions from Dhani Harrison, The Cars‘ Elliot Easton and the Foo Fighters‘ Taylor Hawkins, among others; it was co-produced by Farrell and frequent David Bowie collaborator Tony Visconti; the album is available for pre-order here.
The album’s bombastic lead single, “Pirate Punk Politician,” features a mix of thundering, divebombing Jane’s guitars and the kind of squelchy keyboards and beats Farrell explored with his post-Jane’s side project Porno for Pyros. Kind Heaven is the long-awaited follow-up to Farrell’s 2001 collection of hippie-dream electronic pop Song Yet to Be Sung.
Farrell calls “Pirate” a “good old-fashioned protest song about today’s strongmen and their tactics of oppression,” and a press release about the album describes it as “an expansive set of interlinked compositions fused together by Farrell’s electrifying vocals into a rich sonic tapestry. Meticulously interwoven rock, electronic, and symphonic elements combine to yield a compelling tale told through large-scale orchestral scores (courtesy of Hollywood composer Harry Gregson-Williams), intense back-and-forth duets with Etty Lau Farrell, and flourishes of hard guitar with electronic vocal distortions.”
Farrell and Kind Heaven will kick off a tour in support of the album on June 7 at City Winery in New York, with dates lasting through a June 25 gig at the Mod Club in Toronto, followed by a performance at Lollapalooza in Chicago on Aug. 4; the band will also play this summer’s Lollas in Stockholm and Paris.
