Pearl Jam played Lollapalooza Chile Tuesday night, with a setlist that included their brand new song “Can’t Deny Me.” In an onstage dedication preceding the tune, frontman Eddie Vedder highlighted the survivors of the Parkland shooting tragedy.
“This is dedicated to the incredible students in Florida, and the United States, who survived a terrible tragedy,” he offered, in Spanish. We will be protesting tomorrow in the United States.” Vedder’s words proved germane, in light of today’s nationwide school walkout from coast to coast.
Vedder has shown a pronounced gratitude for the gift of music and its healing agency in recent years. Discussing the group’s formation during their 2017 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Vedder struck a kindly and humble note — “We felt the responsibility to the music was bigger than ourselves or whatever our personal needs of space.”
