Paul Simon gave a spirited performance of “That Was Your Mother” on Monday night (April 15), when he stopped by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. A longtime fan of Simon himself, Colbert joined in on washboard and added to the already energetic track.
The Cajun-inspired tune featured on Simon’s revered 1986 album Graceland, included additional assistance from the Late Show house band Jon Batiste & Stay Human. Batiste joined in on accordion throughout the infectious number while Colbert pranced around the stage with a washboard worn around his neck, playing it with two spoons.
Always the entertainer, Simon got into the performance himself, and the studio audience could be heard screaming along as he showed off his fancy footwork during the song’s instrumental break. The standout performance had Colbert grinning from ear to ear as he shared the stage with one of his heroes.
No stranger to the Late Show, Simon visited in January where he discussed his latest album Into the Blue Light as well as some of his favorite lyrics. Simon is set to headline Outside Lands Festival in August with Twenty One Pilots and Childish Gambino.
