Mumford & Sons paid homage to two American originals during their show at Cleveland, Ohio’s, Quicken Loans Arena on Saturday night (March 9). “Thank you Cleveland for Nine Inch Nails. And thank you to the U.S. for Johnny Cash,” singer Marcus Mumford said as the band dug into a meditative take on NIN’s iconic ballad “Hurt” from 1994’s The Downward Spiral.
The performance in the industrial band’s former home town came as fans celebrate the 25th anniversary of the album, which spawned the devastating song about a struggle with addiction and dark thoughts that was famously covered by late country icon Cash in 2002. The Mumford version began with Marcus Mumford on electric guitar backed by some subtle piano before bursting into a full-fledged rager complete with strings and a banjo.
