It was a night for old friends to reconnect on Sunday when M. Ward shared the stage with his bandmates in two of his side projects: Monsters of Folk and She & Him. Singer/songwriter Ward was opening for Beach Boys legend Brian Wilson at the Hollywood Bowl when he reconnected for the first time since 2010 with his Monsters mates: My Morning Jacket’s Jim James and Conor Oberst.
As first reported by Consequence of Sound, the mini-reunion (minus fourth member producer Mike Mogis) included three songs, Ward’s “Vincent O’Brien” and “To Save Me” and “Whole Lotta Losin” from the Monsters’ self-titled 2009 debut. Ward had another surprise in store for the audience, though, as he also reconnected with his She & Him mate Zooey Deschanel for the first time since 2014 for runs through his songs “Never Had Nobody Like You” and “Magic Trick.”
