We’re nearing the end of the road on the extended anxiety fest known as the 2016 presidential election, but here’s one more Donald Trump protest song to help cap off the cycle. It’s from Philadelphia punks Modern Baseball and it’s called “Bart to the Future Part 2: The Musical.”
If that sounds like it have something to do with The Simpsons, that’s because it most definitely does. The new MoBo song takes its name from a 2000 episode of the beloved cartoon that predicted a Trump presidency and has seen a good deal of revitalized attention lately, for obvious reasons.
“It was impossible to say EVERYTHING we wanted to say about Trump,” Modern Baseball admitted in a statement. Still, the lyrics don’t leave much to the imagination: “Piss off, get lost / I can’t conceive it / How did you make it this far.”
“Bart to the Future Part 2: The Musical” comes from the “30 Days, 30 Songs” project, which has since upped the ante to 50 songs, since broadly artists really, really don’t like the Republican nominee. Previous songs in the anti-Trump initiative came from Jimmy Eat World and Death Cab For Cutie, among others.
For more on what’s now named “30 Days, 50 Songs,” check out our interview with Death Cab For Cutie, whose manager helped launch the project, alongside author Dave Eggers. For more on Modern Baseball, consult our podcast interview pegged to their 2016 album, Holy Ghost. And seriously, this new one is right up there with the best material on that very, very good album.
Here’s the band’s full message regarding the new song:
It was impossible to say EVERYTHING we wanted to say about Trump. We knew that looking at him as a peer, rather than this untouchable figure, that we could judge and treat him like any other greedy, self-centered, short-tempered, racist, sexist, unqualified person you meet in everyday life. Still, knowing that name calling will get you nowhere — we kept our examples generalized so that listeners can come to their own conclusions about how Trump really is, and how he would be as POTUS.
