Metallica honored another hometown hero on their WorldWired tour Tuesday night (Sept. 4) in Minneapolis when the monsters of metal put a unique spin on Prince’s “When Doves Cry.” The interpretation of the song came during guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Rob Trujillo’s segment “Rob & Kirk’s Doodle,” with the pair leaving the towering guitar intro off the 1984 Prince classic as they transformed it into a harder edged rumble courtesy of Trujillo’s gruff vocals and Hammett’s chunky guitar strumming.
Between Trujillo pumping away at his bass on the song that had no bass and flipping Prince’s smooth vocals into a more growly sound, the cover was truly unique. The outcome was a heavy, menacing version of the naturally upbeat, funky track and although the pair definitely did their thing, the cover gave off an ominous vibe that some fans weren’t feeling.
