Lifehouse has celebrated a fair share of chart-topping hits and multi-platinum records in their career, but after more than 17 years as a group, the rock band had yet to release a Greatest Hits album — that is, until today (July 14).
The 18-track Lifehouse: Greatest Hits LP will feature classics like “Hanging By a Moment” and “Halfway Gone,” as well as fan favorites such as “Broken” and “All In.” The sixth track on the album, “You and Me,” though, is one of the band’s biggest songs to date (even reaching No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100), especially thanks to the amounts of weddings and proposals it has soundtracked. But before the song was even released to the rest of the world, Lifehouse frontman Jason Wade used the song as the theme for his own love story.

“I’ve always believed that a song has to mean something to you first if it’s going to mean anything to anybody else. That’s the case with ‘You and Me,'” Wade tells Billboard. “I knew right away when it was finished being written that I was going to propose to my girlfriend with it — on a cassette tape, funny enough.”
In an exclusive video, Wade explains how the song existed before their 2000 debut, No Name Face, dropped, but didn’t make it on to a Lifehouse record until their self-titled release in 2005. Watch the rest of Wade’s story behind the song below:
