Dave Matthews visited The Late Show on Wednesday night (May 10) and revealed to host Stephen Colbert that his son prefers Nirvana‘s grungy guitars to the soft sound of his dad’s music. Matthews, who now lives in Seattle, said his nine-year-old son revealed his true feelings once when they were taking a walk.
“Dad, I like your music, but you know Nirvana is like [makes loud grungy guitar noise] and you’re like [pleasant acoustic strumming],” he said, laughing as he recalled his son’s approximation of the DMB’s place in the rock pantheon. “I thought that was pretty solid,” Matthews admitted.
After a quarter century on the road, Matthews also got wistful about the good old days when his fans got fired up about his music. “We’ve gone from when they used to hold lighters up and that would look like stars and it was pretty and now they hold cell phones up and it’s also pretty but it’s more consistent. It’s like digital stars,” he said. “That’s why I feel old-timey. Because I’m from the days of fire.”
What he was not nostalgic about, though, was the disastrous Fyre Festival. “I don’t want to belittle suffering but I do hope that the Fyre Festival goes down almost as fantastic as Woodstock, because it is one of the greatest things that ever happened,” Matthews said of the massive fail by rapper Ja Rule and business partner Billy McFarland.
