Elle King rocked The Late Late Show with the raucous “Baby Outlaw” from her sophomore album, Shake The Spirit, on Tuesday night (Nov. 13). The 29-year-old “Ex’s & Oh’s” singer added to her collection of soulful bad-girl jams with the feisty performance.
King took the stage in a black cropped jacket and furry bustier, black pants and red lipstick that matched the ruby stage lights, her blonde hair illuminated by a circle of stage lights hovering over her head. Her five-piece band wore matching olive button-ups and white pants as they ripped through the seductive, urgent rocker.
“I’ve been runnin’ since the day I was born,” sang King in a deep, grinding voice. “I’m the definition of the one/ Shed a tear for each soul set free/ But that’s what happens when you dance with me.”
An edgy electric guitar riff led King into the chorus as the rest of the band powered behind her: “Well I ain’t nobody’s baby/ Baby, I’m an outlaw/ Call me a criminal maybe/ Baby, I’m an outlaw/ You know I ain’t evil but I ain’t a saint/ Can’t help it, I was born this way/ Oh baby, outlaw/ Ooh baby, I’m an outlaw,” she sang, dancing around while giving off a 1960s go-go vibe.
The song intensified as King swung around her arms slowly while the guitar broke into a screeching solo. She topped off the rockin’ country-tinged tune by throwing an arm up and hollering into the air.
