Thai funk band Khruangbin — which roughly translates to “airplane” in Thai — is taking their music to the sky.
On Friday (Jan. 26) — the same day the mostly instrumental band released its sophomore effort, Con Solo El Mundo — they also launched AirKhruang.com, inviting users to “book” a curated playlist for an upcoming flight.
AirKhruang uses information provided by the user — such as which airports you’re flying from and to, if it’s a direct flight, whether you prefer window or aisle seats, whether you’re “tea” or “coffee” (meaning chill or upbeat) — to create a personalized playlist powered by Spotify. The site allows users to save the playlists to their Spotify accounts, in order to download them for in-flight listening.
The playlists feature songs that inspired Khruangbin while writing their new album, and the website was inspired by the frequent Facebook Live sessions the band hosts.
AirKhruang provides music for the exact length of the flight, per the information entered by the users, and draws from the band’s sound, which is rooted in music from around the world, but especially the funk and soul of the Mediterranean and the Middle East.
