Nashville-based band Judah & the Lion enlisted Grammy-award winner Kacey Musgraves for their latest single “Pictures,” which they dropped on Wednesday (Feb. 20) along with a lyric video. The band also announced their new album Pep Talks will drop in the spring.
“Pictures” was written by lead vocalist Judah Akers, as his family was “coming apart at the seams” due to alcoholism, affairs, death and divorce while him and fellow band mates took off. “You were mine, always/ And now you’re gone, look what we’ve become/ Just another sad song, of a love gone wrong/ I hate that I’m taking our pictures off the walls,” Akers and Musgraves sing on the ballad’s chorus.
In a statement, Akers explained how the heartbreaking song came about. “I had a really deep moment with my mom when she called me and broke down bawling about how hard it was to move from our family house,” he said. “I wrote the song from her perspective and it came in a flood, in five minutes, right after the call. I needed to write it because I was heartsick.”
The band says Pep Talks will be out on May 3, with pre-orders announced in the near future.
