Just over a week after releasing his “summer bop” jam “New Light,” John Mayer has teased an accompanying visual to be released Friday (May 24), and it’s… interesting. Known for being a bit of a jokester, the singer’s 40-second preview reeks of haphazard satire and cringe-worthy cheesiness. On purpose, of course.
“Every once in a while a song comes along so powerful it requires a music video fast,” reads the screen in corny text reminiscent of Microsoft Word Art. “Where literally anything is better than nothing.”
In this case, “anything” includes green screens, a grossly outdated kitchen and a retro baggy outfit worn by Mayer.
“Is it good?” The text continues. “Define ‘good.’ Is it content? You’re damn right it’s content.”
After seven studio albums and an equal number of Grammy Awards to his name, Mayer is way over taking himself seriously, and it’s hard not to love his goofy side. Watch the hilarious “New Light” video teaser below, and hang tight until Friday to see if there’s more where those green screens came from.
