
College rock legends the Jesus and Mary Chain are working on their first new material since 1998.
Vocalist Jim Reid broke the news in a recent chat with Time Out New York.
“We’re doing an album now,” he announced at the very end of the interview. “We actually just started recording. It’s early days, but I would say it’s a more mature sound for the Mary Chain. But let’s just wait and see.”
The JAMC reunited to play Coachella in 2007 after splitting in the late nineties. The highly influential Scottish indie rock band had been toying with the idea of new music since the ’07 reunion, but this is the first time they’ve made it official.

Their last studio album was 1998’s Munki.
They’ll wrap a North American tour tomorrow (Oct. 2) in Miami, before heading onto some Japanese dates in November. The tour is a 30th anniversary celebration of their landmark debut album, Psychocandy.
