Janis Joplin had one of the most legendary rides in rock n’ roll history.
In 1968 she purchased a 1964 Porsche 356 and had it painted like a psychedelic mural. After spending the past 20 years at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, it sold at auction yesterday (Dec. 11) for $1.76 million.
The car auctioneer RM Sotheby’s broke the news via Twitter:

The proceeds went towards social programs devoted to Joplin’s legacy.
CNN Money points out that celebrity ownership normally doesn’t jack the price like this, but the custom paint job made this one an exception. It eventually began to chip away after Joplin’s death in 1970, and for a time, the new owners (her siblings Michael and Laura Joplin) had it covered over in light grey. Eventually, artists used reference photos to restore it to its original grandeur.
And in case you’re wondering, it still runs just fine — 95-horsepower will do that.
