Jack White swaggered back into our ears on Wednesday morning (Jan. 10) with the soulful, slow-rolling “Connected By Love,” the first single from his upcoming third solo album, Boarding House Reach.
The mournful, buzzing blues track was accompanied by a dramatic video shot in Los Angeles and Nashville by Pasqual Gutierrez that intersperses clips of White emoting the lyrics with visions of many colors of love, from a mother’s affection for her children to a daughter caring for an elderly parent, twins playing in a field and a troubled teen torn by the hard choices he’s made.
The song is a classic White confessional blues burner, with the singer/guitarist singing in a near whisper, “What have I done?/ I have pushed away everyone/ Help me forget/ Let’s put it all to bed,” and begging for salvation and forgiveness before a gospel choir kicks in for the chorus: “Cuz I know/ We’re connected by love/ I’m infected, I need to be protected by your love.”
The digital single is available for purchase, download or streaming here, along with the companion album track “Respect Commander,” a more sinister, upbeat track that mixes a galloping electro beat, glitchy sound effects and wildly shifting tempos in a 4:35 whiplash musical ride.
A 7″ vinyl version is also available via White’s Third Man Records, slated to arrive later this week at independent record stores around the world. A limited edition tri-color 7″ will be on sale for one day only, Saturday, January 13th, exclusively at the Third Man Records storefronts in Nashville and Detroit. The exclusive singles will only be available while they last and will never be sold online; click here for more information on how to purchase the tri-color singles.
“Connected” was produced by White and recorded at in New York, Los Angeles and the Third Man Studios in Nashville, marking the first time White has recorded an album in New York City or Los Angeles, according to a press release announcing the project; no release date has been announced for Boarding House Reach.
In addition to White on vocals, synthesizer and acoustic guitar, the track features a crack band, including drummer Louis Cato (Beyoncé, Q-Tip), bassist Charlotte Kemp Muhl (The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger), synthesizer player DJ Harrison, keyboardist Neal Evans (Soulive, Talib Kweli), percussionist Bobby Allende (David Byrne), and backing vocalists Ann & Regina McCrary of the Nashville gospel trio The McCrary Sisters.
White has lined up festival headlining slots at several festivals so far, including Shaky Knees in Atlanta (May 4th-6th), Boston Calling 2018 (May 25th-27th) and Governor’s Ball in New York (June 1st-3rd); additional dates will be announced soon.
