Iron Maiden’s new studio album The Book of Souls drops Sept. 4, and the song “Tears of a Clown” hits on some especially poignant subject matter.
According to an interview with Corriere Della Sera, lead singer Bruce Dickinson announced the track was inspired by Robin Williams. Dickinson calls it his “favorite song” on the new set, musing on the tragedy of Williams’ apparent happiness when he was struggling with depression and illness on the inside. It appears as track nine on the new LP and was written by Maiden’s Adrian Smith and Steve Harris.
The Book of Souls is due Sept. 4 on Sanctuary Copyrights in the United States. It’s their first studio album since 2010’s The Final Frontier.
Dickinson was recently given a clean bill of health following chemotherapy and radiation therapy to defeat a cancerous tumor on his tongue.
Aug. 11, 2015 marked the one-year anniversary of the storied comedian’s suicide. He took his own life at the age of 63, struggling with severe depression and the onset of Parkinson’s disease.
