Rock trio Highly Suspect caught up with Billboard to share their essential picks for a female-led electro-pop playlist, featuring Grimes, Banks and London Grammar.
On Grimes’ “World Princess Part II”: It almost refers to the 80s in certain ways, but if you can’t dance to that song…if you don’t get down with that song, then you’re probably not a real human, cause it’s so good. It’s just catchy. What she’s able to do with the sonic textures in that song in particular, in that album [Art Angels] in particular, are just kind of mind-blowing. Cause she did it all herself, she wasn’t like sourcing from other people, and she is inspirational in that sense because she proves that there’s no rules in music. This is art.”
On Banks: “She does a lot of really adventurous things with her vocals and I admire that. It’s hard to reproduce that sort of thing live but she can do it. One song that sticks out in particular is “Better” – it’s just really moving…It has a very natural feel to it but it’s definitely electronic pop.”
On London Grammar: “They have a really broad palette of influences in their music. I was listening from one song to the next and it was constantly different, the palette was changing, some songs would have electronic drums, some would have acoustic drums. Her vocal range is from there to up here.”
