Before they roared through “Crazy on You” at New York’s Beacon Theatre on Thursday night (March 7), Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart spoke to Billboard about the massive summer tour they’re gearing up for with Joan Jett, Sheryl Crow and more.
“In this era that we’re in right now, it’s time for women to unite, empower each other, work together and present, and kind of update the culture a little bit — and show strength and togetherness, and turn it up louder,” Nancy said hours before their Love Rock NYC set.
“One of the things I’m looking forward to the most this summer with the tour is the women getting up there, but also each woman has this incredible band with them,” added Ann. “There’ll be lots of men up onstage, so you’ll have the two genders working together to do this thing, which is what we’re really working for in the culture.”
The tour — which kicks off on July 9 in St. Louis — will feature support from Joan Jett, Elle King, Brandi Carlile, Sheryl Crow and other guitar-slinging powerhouses on select dates. For Crow, who also performed at Love Rocks NYC, this is a dream come true.
“I grew up with them as being the template,” she said. “It was Heart, Stevie Nicks, Linda Ronstadt — women who really held their own. They rocked. They hung with the guys, yet they were still cool chicks. It’s going to be fantastic to be out there and absorb some of their greatness.”
Greatness will abound, but will Heart fans hear new material this summer? Stay tuned, as the door is open for that.
“There’s a couple of ideas banging around!” says Nancy. “We have to get into rehearsal and figure it out. We want to do stuff people want to hear, but we also want to reinterpret some stuff and maybe do something surprising.”
