Fats Domino has passed away this morning (Oct. 25) at the age of 89 in his native New Orleans, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune. Upon hearing of his death, celebrities took to Twitter to honor the rock ‘n’ roll legend, including Harry Connick, Jr., LL Cool J, Darius Rucker and more.
Born Antoine Dominique Domino Jr., on Feb. 26, 1928, in New Orleans’ Lower 9th Ward, Domino started in the music scene at a young age, dropping out of high school and playing in local bars. WIth a prime form 1949 to 1960, Domino pioneered in the rock and roll space with hits such as “Ain’t It a Shame,” “The Fat Man” and a cover of Glenn Miller Orchestra’s “Blueberry Hill.”
In his later years, Domino stopped touring in 1991 after a health scare and remained in New Orleans until his death with his eight children and wife. His famous home and most of his possessions were wiped out by the devastating Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
