Canadian singer-songwriter Evan Konrad announces his signing to Lava Records and debuts his first song “Long Way Out,” premiering exclusively on Billboard Thursday (Feb. 21).
The mesmerizing, haunting rock tune sees Konrad sing about longing. “This isn’t how I thought of our escape/ Don’t you know what’s at stake/ I’ve had all I can take/ I feel our hands separate,” Konrad emotes, piercing vocals resonating on the track.
“‘Long Way Out’ is a journey through the act of letting go, and how romanticized it can be throughout the grieving process,” Konrad tells Billboard. “Unable to accept the changes within ourselves, or the changes in another person, as we reach for a connection that no longer exists,” he adds. “I wrote this song to acknowledge and work through this within myself. I want this song to be a beacon of light for anyone who is looking for the same liberation I sought after.”
Head of Lava Records Jason Flom says he knew he wanted to sign Konrad “immediately” when remembering the first time he listened to the artist’s music. “I first heard Evan’s music on headphones in a basement over vegan breakfast in Toronto and I knew I had to sign him immediately,” Flom says. “His voice, musicality and lyrics make him a once in a generation talent.”
Flom adds that meeting Konrad and hearing his vision sealed the deal. “When I sat down with Evan and heard his vision for the next five years and the body of work he’s created above and beyond this first EP I was blown away. The future belongs to Evan Konrad,” he says.
