The Early November’s second phase has entered its own second phase. Today, the New Jersey-bred band announces its new album Imbue; due May 12, it’s their second new album (and fourth overall) since reforming in 2011 after a four-year hiatus.
And we’ve got a first listen of their new song “Narrow Mouth,” the opening track and first song shared off the record. The band ranges from soft to loud and calm to unhinged across this sturdy rock song, which soars through an urgent chorus and uses driving guitar breakdowns to recollect and build up again. It almost sounds like an album’s ebb and flow across five minutes, which another way of saying, “job well done.” Check it out below:
The Early November went on hiatus after releasing a pair of full lengths for Drive-Thru Records — 2003’s The Room’s Too Cold and 2006’s The Mother, the Mechanic, and the Path. Neither was a mainstream hit, but both earned the band a loyal fan base that encouraged them to reform in 2011. Their influence has guided plenty of younger bands with like-minded indie rock and emo influences; in fact, The Early November is touring with a few of them later this year.
Frontman Ace Enders and company have a bunch of European and North American dates lined up with You Blew It!, A Great Big Pile Of Leaves, Lydia, and Restorations.
