Death Cab for Cutie took a gentle — and socially distanced — approach when they appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to perform on Tuesday (Jan. 26).
With each of the band’s five members “taking the stage” from their respective homes, the alt-rock group from Bellingham, Wash., offered up a soft, dreamy take on TLC’s 1995 classic “Waterfalls.” The original’s R&B and funk feel was replaced with a more guitar-forward version with frontman Ben Gibbard’s tender vocals taking the spotlight.
The cover is from Death Cab for Cutie’s latest release, The Georgia EP, which dropped on Jan. 13. The project features covers of notable artists from the Peach State — including R.E.M. and Vic Chesnutt — and was previously available for 24 hours in December to help raise money for Fair Fight Action, Stacey Abrams’ voting rights organization. The EP raised $100,000 at the time.

TLC’s “Waterfalls” — from their 12-times platinum sophomore album CrazySexyCool — peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in July 1995 and spent 34 weeks on the chart. The hit song, whose lyrics and videos reflect the war against drugs and the AIDS epidemic at the time, came in at No. 22 on Billboard’s Biggest Songs of All Time in 2015.
Fans of the R&B trio will get to learn more of TLC’s story this year. A&E Network announced in October that a two-hour Biography documentary about the group will be airing this year.
