Dave Grohl and Lemmy Kilmister go way back. Aside from surely being influenced by Motörhead as a kid, the Foo Fighters frontman teamed with Lemmy for his short-lived metal side project Probot and joined him onstage (along with Slash) at the 2010 Revolver Golden Gods Awards for a performance of “Ace of Spades.”
So when Grohl heard of Lemmy’s sudden passing on the evening of Dec. 28, he took quick action. By the end of Dec. 29, he had some fresh new Motörhead ink. Grohl got a Lemmy tribute tattoo on his left forearm, paying homage to — what else — the ace of spades.
Grohl and Lemmy teamed on Probot’s lone album, a self-titled effort from 2004. For the project, Grohl wrote instrumental songs and had some of his favorite metal vocalists sing over them. Lemmy handled a track called “Shake Your Blood,” which they also performed live together a couple times.
