For his first musical release in eight years, former Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns enlisted help from an unlikely source. Looking for some cross-genre collaboration, Johns flew from Australia to New Zealand to work with producer Joel Little, best known for co-producing, co-writing and mixing Lorde’s debut album, Pure Heroine.

“Late Night Drive” is the final track on Johns’ forthcoming solo EP Aerial Love, due March 13 via Eleven: A Music Company. Johns tells Billboard how the song came about:

“It was after we had [the title track off the EP] Aerial Love in the bag, and I finally left the house and got a plane ticket to New Zealand and worked in Joel’s studio for awhile and that was one of the ones that we came up with. There are a couple of others that made the album but I thought ‘Late Night Drive’ was just a really nice way to musically and lyrically wrap up what’s to be the first taste of what I’m doing at the moment.”

Johns has not released new music since Silverchair’s final album, 2007’s Young Modern. The band has been on “indefinite hibernation” since 2011.
