The concept is not that high: in her new video for “Elevator Operator,” Courtney Barnett plays, yup, an elevator operator who encounters a series of fellow musicians and luminaries as she works her way up and down a skyscraper.
Some of them you might recognize (Sleater Kinney, Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy and son Spencer) and some might be more familiar to her fans down under, including her bandmates (Dave Mudie, Bones Sloane), the clip’s director, Sunny Leunig, beloved Australian actresses Tain Stangret and Magda Szubanski, members of Aussie bands Camp Cope, Batpiss, Ouch My Face, The Finks, The Drones and the legendary Paul Kelly, Melbourne artists Garrett and Will Huxley and Gabi Barton and the East Brunswick All Girls Choir.
Barnett deals with the series of oddball characters before ending up on the rooftop of Melbourne’s Nicholas building where she contemplates the enormity of the city before plugging in and rocking a bit.
